Identity modernization

Identity modernization for mid-sized companies on Microsoft

Active Directory that nobody fully owns, accounts that outlive the people they belonged to, and admin rights that keep growing. We clean up and modernize identity on Microsoft Entra ID, hands-on, with your IT team.

Who this is for

This page is for the IT or operations lead at a mid-sized company that runs on Microsoft. You probably operate in several countries across Latin America and the U.S., and your own IT team already carries more than it can finish. You want a partner who does hands-on work next to your team.

Identity has usually grown in layers. One office arrived through an acquisition, another opened with its own setup, and each country added its own habits. Active Directory still runs on servers few people want to touch, while Microsoft 365 and Entra ID run next to it. Identity modernization brings those layers into one design that your team can run.

Where identity usually breaks

Four problems come up again and again in companies of this size. Each one is easy to live with until an audit, an incident or a departure makes it visible.

  • Legacy Active Directory

Domains built years ago stay alive on servers and trusts that nobody wants to change. Group policies pile up, naming differs by country, and the move to the cloud keeps slipping because the starting point is unclear.

  • Stale and leaver accounts

People change roles and leave, but their accounts, mailboxes and group memberships stay. Contractors keep access after the project ends. HR knows who left, and IT often finds out later. Each forgotten account is a sign-in that nobody watches.

  • Too many admins

Global and domain admin rights get handed out for a quick fix and never taken back. Shared admin accounts and everyday accounts with full rights make one stolen password far more costly than it needs to be.

  • Audit findings on access

Auditors, insurers and customer questionnaires ask who has access to what and who approved it. Without regular reviews, the answer comes from spreadsheets built in a hurry, and the same findings return the next year.

What the work covers

We work in five steps, in this order, with your IT team involved in each one. Each step ends with something your team can see and keep, such as an inventory, a cleaner directory or a set of written policies. This is how our Active Directory modernization services and Microsoft Entra ID consulting services are organized.

  1. Assess what you have

We read your directories, your Entra ID tenant, admin roles and sign-in settings. The result is a plain inventory of domains, accounts, groups, applications and who holds privileged access, with the gaps ranked by risk. This is also where we learn how many tenants and directories you really run.

  2. Clean up before moving

Old accounts, empty groups, unused service accounts and outdated policies are fixed or removed first. Moving a messy directory to the cloud only moves the mess, so this step makes the next one smaller and safer. Your team approves what is removed, and where an account is unclear we ask its owner.

  3. Move from Active Directory to Entra ID

We plan the move in stages, by country or by business unit, so people keep working. Sign-in, device management with Intune and the applications that depend on Active Directory are handled in a sequence agreed with your team. Servers and applications that have to stay on-premises are listed with a plan for each.

  4. Access reviews and leavers

Managers and application owners confirm on a schedule who still needs access. A leaver process connects HR changes to account removal, so access ends when employment does. The reviews also produce the evidence auditors ask for. We agree with you who reviews what in each country.

  5. Conditional Access and admin rights

We define Conditional Access policies that require MFA and check the device, with sensible exceptions for the way people really work. Admin rights are cut down to the people who need them, held in separate accounts and given only when needed. Emergency access accounts are set up and tested.

If you want a read-only look at identity, devices, email and apps before any project, start with the review.

Identity is also the base of Zero Trust, where every request is checked for who is asking and from which device.

Several countries, one or many tenants

Companies that operate across Latin America and the U.S. rarely have one clean identity setup. Each country may have its own domain, its own Microsoft 365 tenant or its own local administrator, often inherited from an acquisition or a local partner. The first decision is whether to consolidate into one tenant or keep several on purpose. The answer depends on legal entities, where data must stay and how much the countries share.

We help you make that choice and write it down. Then we apply one standard for sign-in, MFA, admin roles and leaver handling in every country. Where a country has to stay separate, we design the links between tenants on purpose. Time zones, languages and local audit expectations shape how reviews and approvals run, and we plan around them with your regional teams. The work is led by someone who has run technology across the region.

Mail, collaboration and directory work often belong in the same project, so the Microsoft 365 service page covers that side.

Common questions

What is identity modernization?

Identity modernization means moving how people sign in and get access from older, on-premises systems such as Active Directory to a managed, cloud-based design built on Microsoft Entra ID. It also covers the habits around it: who approves access, how leavers are removed and how admin rights are controlled. The aim is one clear design that your team can run and an auditor can follow.

Do we have to leave Active Directory completely?

Not always. Some servers and applications still need it, and a staged plan can keep Active Directory for them while everything else moves to Entra ID. We list what depends on it during the assessment, then decide with your team what moves, what stays and what is retired.

What do identity governance services for mid-sized companies include?

At this size, governance means a short list of routines that actually run. Access reviews with named reviewers, a joiner, mover and leaver process, limits on admin roles, and records that show who approved what. We build these with Microsoft Entra ID capabilities and check early what your current setup supports.

Can you work alongside our IT team?

Yes. The work is hands-on and built around your team. They stay involved in decisions and in each change, and they end up with documentation and policies they can run without us. When the team is short of time, we can take on more of the work.

Where should we start?

A short call is enough to start. We ask how identity is set up today, where it hurts and which countries are involved, and tell you what we would look at first. If a read-only look makes sense, the Microsoft 365 Security Review is the natural first step.
